WOW This guy used the correct electronic terms for the variable resistor.

Well except for the 2 with alchohol and qtip suggestions That is what I use and a little canned air to ensure that it is dry before powering it up.

Darn 9! years since I wrote that . least dirty pots haver been replaced by contactless technology and microwaves now

Try using a q-tip with a bit of alcohol on it and swab it out...that is my theory anyway...
