Normal qwerty but they have an extra function that pops up on screen. You can turn it on in your PC, go to control panel, languages, and turn on the language bar for Japanese.
Japanese words can be formed in three different alphabets which can correspond to each other, so they type the 'romanji' version which brings a pop up for Japanese and Chinese characters.
Oh yeah, it's not just the Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Korean, etc they all have different characters and languages.

the keyboard has the most used characters available using a special function key (like we use the shift key to get upper case). Same with Arabic, Thai, etc...

I believe its very simple. They have the normal QWERTY keyboard but if they type in a simple katacana like 'SO', they would type S-O and the letters on the computer would automatically change to that symbol.

To write those kanji,they only have to write in katakana/hiragana/roman and computer will change automaticly.
