If you handle the divorce yourself the person starting the proceedings will have to pay £300 in initial court costs and an additional £60 or thereabouts to get the final paperwork done. You can easily get the forms for WH Smith and they are very straightforward as long as your divorce is simple.

I wold advise however that you note that you cannot finalise your divorce without the financial settlement agreement (consent order) being signed by both parties even if this is a simple clean break and this is where the costs can start escalating if there is disagreement. It is not wise to draft the consent order yourself but a good solicitor might only charge you around £100 if you and your ex agree on the terms beforehand. Also, the solicitor's fees will mount if there are custody issues.

So, the actual divorce should cost you in the region of £400 but keeping things amicable will reduce the other costs. Realistically if you go to court to finalise the financial arrangements you are looking at £5,000 for each party.

If you have nothing - not a lot! My b/f divorced and did it online (quickiedivorce.com) for about £300 but they had no equity and the kids were grown. My divorce cost me about £4,500 on legal fees but we had house, money and 2 babies and went to court over everything... in my case it was worth every penny to get shot of the useless cheating lump! Good luck - enjoy your freedom!

I got divorced in 1998 and all I paid was £60 for the solicitor to send out a few letters for me. Because my husband was divorcing me he had to pay out the bigger share.

Ladies quite often qualify for legal aid. Depends how cooperative the male is. Once the lawyers get involved the costs skyrocket.

It all depends how much money is involved!
