With the dwindling petroleum resources and its disparity in distribution among nations, and relatively slow development and usage of alternative energy sources like wind, wave or solar energy, nuclear energy is a real viable and long-term alternative. But its development, though rapid in the developed world, is still in its nascent stages in the developing world. Add to that the possibility that the technology nay fall in the hands of rogues who may misuse it for making nuclear armament (the difference seems very thin indeed) has made sure the technology remained in the hands of a select few. Other tough issues are the operational safety aspects and waste disposal issues, which need to be addressed real seriously. In short, yes, the world needs it very badly, but needs to tread a cautious path in making the technology everybody's property.

Nuclear power is necessary as a means of providing consumers with all the energy they need without contributing to global warming. At present, alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind power, cannot begin to replace coal and oil based technologies as the demand for energy soars around the world. Nuclear power is something we're all going to be hearing much more about for the rest of this century, whether we like it or not.

It has a lot of good aspects, but one major BAD aspect which, in my opinion outweighs all the others put together, and that is the nuclear waste; it will be dangerous for thousands of years, and just where do we dump it? And can we be assured that our containment devices will hold up for that long??? It's time to tap into solar power and continue with other natural (not so dangerous) ways of producing power.

We need nuclear power for clean and peaceful use. Its human nature to enhance the senses, to see more, to hear more, to taste more, to feel more.......its the extension of the same kind of thinking... to get more from less. It is sheer lust. We have sufficient resources available on this earth to fulfill our needs, but mankind wants quickfix results, more & more from less.
We have developed the science in a debatable situation. If we use the techniques in for the betterment of the mankind, nuclear power is very much required. If it is used to destroy the mankind, it is a waste.

Hi,
our conventional energy is from Oil, gas, petroleum and water. Except water, all other resources are natural and deplorable and will finish one day. Also they are not as efficient and prodcutive and less polluting as Nuclear energy. Hence the best source for a cheap, non pulluting, huge energy is nuclear energy. Nuclear material multiplies so fast with so little tht it can last for many years..

It's cheep, safe and non-polluting.

France gets about 75% of there power from nuclear, and they are developing ways of cutting 1/2 life contamination time of fuel rods to reasonable times. Like 100 years vs 10,000

Once in a while we need the fun of facing the problem of radioactive waste, and.. whitout nuclear power ... I guess no way to log in to Yahoo Answers... so really don't see the reason why we shouldn't blow them all up right now.

We need power and nuclear power is the cheapest and most abundant source we have left. It will become more important as the fossil fuel supplies continue to deplete.
