The sun is WAAYYY bigger.

The moon appears bigger only because it is closer.

It takes us 365 days to circle the sun because our orbit is so large.

It only takes 28 days for the moon to circle the earth.

The sun is much MUCH bigger..

"The Sun's diameter is 1.4 million kilometers (870,000 miles). But to most people, that still doesn't give them an appreciation of the Sun's size.

The Sun is ENORMOUS compared to other objects in the solar system! It is so massive that is accounts for 99.9% of all of the matter in the solar system. In fact, the Sun is so big that if it were hollow, you could fit over one million Earth's inside of it! "

"Compared with the satellites of other planets of the solar system, The Moon is a large Moon with a diameter of 3476 km and a mass of 7.349E+22 kg kg.

The Moon is an average distance of 384400 km from Earth and completes its revolution of Earth in 27.32 days."

So.. the person who said the sun is like a basketball and the moon a baseball.. not even close. if the sun were a basketball, the moon would be much closer to the size of a grain of sand than a baseball, the earth wouldn't even be as large as a golf ball on that scale, and the earth is roughly 2 1/2 times the size of the moon!

The diameter of the sun is about 400 times that of the moon, and it out-masses the moon by about 27 million times, they are both approximately the same apparent size in our sky. This happy coincidence is what makes it possible for us to observe total solar eclipses. If the conditions are right, the entire disk of the sun is just covered by that of the moon, blocking the bright light of the solar photosphere, but still allowing us to observe the sun's prominences and corona.
