German & Japanese Engineering dominated the 90s car industry, but in this decade they have shown signs of slipping from that position. Whereas, the American companies have made significant progress after their crappy performance in the 80s and 90s.

Do you think that the time is coming soon when American cars will dominate again?

I don't think 'dominate' is a possibility. There's simply too many options.

Also, people are biased against american brands, for whatever (real or BS) reason.

I heard this morning that GM beat Honda in JD Power owner satisfaction numbers (I'm not sure what time period)... That doesn't stop people from posting 'GM makes crap' comments all over the internet.

There is another argument to be made that GM and Ford do still dominate the auto market - they are #1 & #2 in total domestic sales, and have been for 50+ years. Toyota is a distant 4th, but may beat Chrysler for #3 soon.

From a consumer's standpoint, you can always tell what each manufacturer aims for when they build their cars. Several manufacturers choose to prioritize driving feel and building cars for enthusiasts, while some manufacturers choose to build vehicles for convenience/what's in current demand, and we can continue. The succesful manufacturers, unfortunately, lose company image to us enthusiasts because they're keeping up with consumer demands.

In my opinion, many domestic companies can be saved by either merging with other manufacturers to share documented and engineered information to make great cars, or broaden their consumer demands by making different cars for different people. There's a large market for van owners, there's a large market for automotive enthusiasts, there's a large market for trucks, etc.
