Emile Durkheim was very much influenced by Auguste Comte; however, he disagreed with Comte's idea of social evolution occuring in "The Law of Three Stages:" Theological Stage, Metaphysical Stage, and Positivistic Stage. Instead, he favored a slow and continual process that he described in his doctoral dissertation, "The Division of Labor in Society."

Although Comte is referred to as the "Father of Sociology," I'd like to nominate Durkheim. He wrote "The Rules of Sociological Method" and did the first sociological study, "Suicide."

Durkheim introduced a method of analysis, called structural-functionalism, which influenced all sociologists who followed him.
