3 men went to a hotel to rent a room, the cost of the room was $30. Each man paid $10 to the bellboy and proceeded to there room. After a little while the bellboy realized that there was a special on rooms that night and the price for the mens room should have been $25. On his way to the mens room to give them back $5 he was puzzled how he was going to split $5 as he had no change. He decided he would give them each $1 and keep the remaining $2 for himself. So each man originally paid $10, but after the bellboy gave each man $1 back, each man paid $9. 9 x 3 = $27 plus the $2 the bellboy put in his pocket equals $29. The original price for the room was $30. Where did the last dollar go?

In the end each man paid $9, and the bellboy kept $2
I know you can reverse the problem and add the 25 with the 3 the men were refunded and the 2 the bellboy kept.
There is a reason why the problem comes up 1 dollar short and its not because you counted the $2 twice.

should not add $2 to the $27. the $2 was meant as a refund, thus should be $27-2=$25.

The problem lies in how you are calculating the math. Look at it this way:
Each man pays 10.00 (10+10+10)
The bell boy REFUNDS $5.00 (1+1+1+2)
10+10+10-1-1-1-2 = 25
There really is no missing dollar. The trick is: You are subtracting $1 (3) times then adding $2, which equals $29. In reality, you need to be SUBTRACTING the 2! The $5 was a refund, therefore you should be subtracting ALL $5. So the problem should say: The bell boy gave each man $1.00 back, so each man paid $9.00. 9*3 = 27. Then he gave himself a $2 tip. 27-2 = $25.00, which is the cost of the room.

This is a trick question. The bellboy gave each man back $1, and since he had $30 originally, the bellboy was left with $27. If he then pocketed an extra $2, you would SUBTRACT the $2 from $27 to get $25, which was the actual price of the room. So the dishonest bellboy gets $2, the hotel gets $25.

The question is telling you to add $2 to $27, which makes no sense because you are counting the leftover $2 twice.

The men originally $30, but they were supposed to get back $5 as the cost for the room was $25. They did not get back $5, they got back $3. So, in total they paid $27 as $30 - $3 = $27. So yes, $27 / 3 = $9 and so each man did pay $9! Where is the problem? They got back the $3 dollars didn't they?

Cost of the room is $30
Each man pays £10
Bellboy claims $2
and returns $1 each

You are having us do the wrong sum at the end.
The room cost $25
to get it up to $28 you add on the $3 returned ($1 to each man)
then to get it to $30 you add the $2 the Bellboy claimed.

So there is no missing money

I happen to have a great calculus teacher. He explained a derivative using the limit definition and a graph one day, and it took a few weeks but one day it just clicked in my head. I'll try to explain it now. Recall the limit definition. lim --->0 f(x+Δx)-f(x) / Δx Δx You can recognize this as the slope formula. y2-y1 /x2-x1 The Δx means the change in x. To find the change you subtract what you end with from what you started with. f(x) is a y value. and f(x+ Δx) is the second y value. So basically as the change in x becomes infinitely small, what is the y value, or the instantaneous rate of change. I hope that helps. As for why you aren't getting it, it's either a bad teacher, or maybe you just aren't a math person. But I think that you should just work on more story problems to help you out, it's the best way to learn.

this is a simple question
each of them gave $10 first
again the belly boy boy gave them $1 each
so out of 30 they gave they have recieved $3 ,now the total is 3 out of 5 ,2$ is within belly boy so total =5+25=30,
u are saying that each men recieved $1 each so they have paid each $9 since 9*3=27. remaining $1 is gone , its a riddle in mathematics simply as that.there is no one $ gone any where

this is so simple ?y?yeeeeeeh, your asking is different of course its a puzzle such that people can think and think a lot ,just mad?
