It kinda makes me Wonder why, if you paid for the vehicle it is in your friends name. Why did you not register the car in your name?

Do you have a lawyer? If not, GET ONE NOW!

You need a lawyer in Tennessee, and in the state that you are in...

Some questions that you left out:

1) Is the car truly titled in your ex-boyfriend's name?
If yes, then its possible that he has a cause of action for you stealing the car. The district attorney, when presented with enough evidence that you paid for the car, etc, may drop the charges, but initially, the charges will stand.

2) If he has sworn out a complaint for theft, then he has to have shown the officers that you have taken items that didn't belong to you. Make sure you are honest with your attorney about this, explain EXACTLY what happend, and don't leave anything out. Let the attorney decide what is relevant.

3) Have you gotten an attorney yet? if not, WHY? You are charged with a felony. if you can't afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.

Don't ask the questions here. You need an attorney licensed in your state (TN or WA or whereever) and then you can deal with this properly.

This is unfortunate...You Bf's name is on the Title, the law doesn't care who paid for it...he legally owns it, and you are in possession of it...He can claim it to be stolen. Though what he is doing is unethical and borders immoral, it is legal. You need a lawyer like no one else. Get some legal advice.
