Arrange to meet in a public place, where the girl will feel safe. Coffee is always good. Coffee and pie even better, lol. If you have a class together, you can always do the study date thingy to scope one another out.
My bf is my brother-in-law's cousin and I met him when he dropped by their house one morn for coffee (I think there might have been a bit of subtrefuge on my brother-in-law's part, lol). Very safe. Our first date was at a family get together.

A pre-date thingy, like checking it out first whether you like the guy or not... hmmm... the CAMPUS.
In dates, guys usually give their best on the first date. At least, in campus or in a place where there are many people, you will know whether he is being real to you or not.
Besides being cheap, it is definitely SAFE!

I'd say going out for a ride kinda get to know each other then go to a fancy restaurant where soft music is playing and eat and still be talking to each other...then after that take her home and hug her and let her know you really enjoyed tonight and you would like to do it again sometime..make her feel good and dont rush things because that could ruin it all...

something sweet and romantic to start, then to acctually get to know the person. take her somewhere that means something to you, and express that at some point during the date in a direct manor. you could acctually start a conversation wit it (assuming its not somewhere youve taken other dates, and thats why it means something). as loong as you dont dwell on it, its very sweet and thoughtful.

usually they would like to go some where that's nice but quit like a restaurant but what i do is ask them what they want to do oh good luck

Go to a movie and dinner... dinner so you can talk to see if you like each other.. and a movie.. so you don't have to talk... just in case you don't like each other.. LOL :)
