It can be both. Sometimes if they are advertising for the stickers, it's the stickers, and sometimes they are advertising the "template" for the painted ones, so it's painted. Or sometimes they are advertising for the salon, so it can be either/or kinda situation.

I've tried both stickers and painted on by very thin brushes at the salon. You need a EXTREMELY steady hand, I've tried it before on my own, and well, my left hand didn't turn out as nice as my right (I'm left handed), so now I stick to stickers or templates.

Could be either; have to look closely or ask the lady how it was done. Some are stickers or decals that anyone can buy from a beauty supply store. Some are actually painted on with various nail art brushes and nail paints.

Some people paint and some people don't. My cousin actually uses a toothpick just because toothpicks have sharp tips and they are really easy to use since you want to have nice n neat drawings.

It depends on how good your nail technician is. Mine did all of her designs free hand, most use little stickers.
