i want a tattoo of catwoman on top of a building, her arms outstretched, her knees bent so that it looks like she's about to jump off it, overlooking the city skyline, w/the words 'love me when i'm gone' either over it, or under it. if i get a really, really detailed tat, how many trips am i looking at to the tat shop to get this done?

for that much detail, i reckon your tattoo would cover at least half your back for a small version, otherwise a full back. or chest. or wherever you're planning to put it, you get the idea of the size.

coloured tattoo would take a longer time. black, you can choose all black lines, but since you want detail it'll probably be a full black outlining with toning and shading.
but i think all black would be cool, with very little other colours.

you can decide to book an appointment for a whole day for the artist to finish it, and that would be preferred if you can take the pain and discomfort.

or you could arrange trips one at a time, maybe 2-3 hours per session, it's up to you.
total time/days depend on the artist, how well he/she thinks he/she can do it in an estimated time frame.

if you'd arrange a 2 hour session for a couple of sessions, i'd estimate about 2 sessions for complete outline, 2 sessions for basic shading, 1 session for shadowing, 2-3 sessions for the rest of toning.
this is estimated if you were to go for all-black, just about covering only your back.

but yeah just my personal opinion since i've gone for a couple of tattoos average size and different types.

you should really just go and consult a tattoo artist. only the person who does it will be able to tell how long it will take. and it depends on skill too, for the detail you want. =))

i hope you get a great one-

Mostly, it will depend on how big it is, even a detailed tat, if it is kinda small, can be done in just one visit, but when you talking about your sleeve tats or something that can cover large portion of your body, it is going to take a couple of visits. It is for your health that the large ones will take more than one visit, so just roll with it, one thing though, make sure the shop your going to get your tat, is a good operation, for starters, brand new, opened in front of you needles, freshly poured ink, and the like, spend some time in the shop, and watch how they operate before you actually sit for your tat!!

It would depend on the artist and how much you can endure at one sitting, but it sounds like anywhere from 2-5+. GL

It depends on how much you can take at one time. It will probably take three hours or so, so I'd guess two trips should be all you need.
