Back in the 1950s, when couples were supposedly sleeping in separate beds and love was chaste and pure, a kiss was a gentle touch and nothing more. The "French Kiss" was in reality the normal kiss for most of the world, and certainly the norm in the 70s and beyond!

French kissing as it is known today became popular after World War One; the French showed the British and American soldiers how to do it:

I heard somewhere that during Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798-99, his soldiers saw the natives kissing this way, brought the practice back to France and took credit for it; this means that the practice is actually Egyptian, not French.

Just a guess but it probably came from the common way of feeding a small child by chewing the food for them and moving the food to them by a kiss. Sounds strange but it was a common way to do things not too long ago.

Someone once stuck their tongue out and someone else returned the gesture. Then they were like "that's hot, let's do it some more" and not long after there was AIDS.
