we have a desktop connected to a cable modem surfboard, which controls both the internet and cable tv. i just got a brand new laptop and i have no idea how to connect it to the internet. i don't care if i have to unplug the desktop from the internet to do it. the only cords given to me with the laptop are a USB port, which i don't know where to hook up. also, i was given two other dial up cords (i think) please help

1.if there is a network (RJ45) socket on your laptop, you can connect it to PC with a network cable.
2. if there is not. search for COM port (it has 9 pin and is like a D)
connect laptop with a RS232 cable to PC
3. connect a external modem which it connect to USB port.

Before you begin, make sure your Laptop has a Ethernet port. The port should look like an over sized telephone jack.
If you don't have this port then you will have to get a PCMCIA 10/100 base TX Ethernet card.
After that, you will need a 10/100 Base TX network hub (ROUTER)
and last but not least, 2 10/100base TX cables to connect everything up.
When you get all this stuff, just follow the manuals on hooking everything up
