All good answers so far.
I'd say to go for the gourd decorating because kids that age like crafts. Have a variety of things like burlap strips to make hats or clothes, googly eyes, colored markers, sparkly glue, yarn for hair or clothes, etc. set up on a table with a couple of plastic tablecloths and maybe a tarp on the floor under it.
Instead of bobbing for apples, which people these days find a lot grosser than we did when I was a kid, you could string some apples from a line and have them race to eat them without using their hands. That can be a hoot but lacks other kids' saliva.
Pin the leaf on the tree suggested above is good. You might also make a construction paper scarecrow and play pin the nose on the scarecrow. For a blindfold you could have a bandana on a straw hat.
You could have a pumpkin seed spitting contest if they aren't too prim.
I'd see if I could find some little toy rakes at the 99 cent store and have a race to see who can rake a few leaves across the yard in the shortest time or the most leaves in a given time.
You could do an apple relay race, perhaps they can't use their hands and have to tuck the apples under their chins.
You could have a pile of leaves (dry ones) if you live an an area with a lot of them and hide pennies or plastic barn animals or something in them and see who can find the most.
That's what comes to mind at the moment. I'm more into games than decorations, sorry. I like to have some project like decorating a couple of pumpkins or stringing some paper leaves on hand in case some kids show up early and need something to do to keep them occupied and feeling important until the bulk of the gang gets there.

We had a bon fire outside and roasted hot dogs
and marshmellows. Even had hot chocolate.
The kids were able to pick leaves so they could
make pressed leaves.
Pumpkins were drawn and colored. The prize went
to the wildest drawn face. We played pin the tail
on the witch and the prizes were fall based.
There are so many things you can do with a fall
theme. The highlight was bobing for apples.

They could make anything with apples and squash for foods, if it's warm enough they could bob for apples and collect dry leaves and acorns to decorate their tables. Paint gourds and pumpkins or make corn dollies. If you plant pumpkins now, they will be ready by October to be harvested by the kids. Do they still enjoy these kinds of things?

Why not see if there is a real working farm in your area and take the kids' there. I know here in No. Az. we go to Young's Farm and they have tractor rides and the kids get to see where the turkeys' live and see real farm animals besides going into the corn field and pumpkin patch and picking their own pumpkins. Our farm has a little of something for everyone and you can call ahead and reserve an area for bday cake and party. Plus, no clean-up for Mom! yeah

bobbing for apples is fun. A hayride is always the best. If you have a lawnmower with a wagon, that will do. just get some loose straw(hay) and fill it. If you have access to a small tractor and wagon that's fun too.
