For travel and internet, any laptop will suffice. Look for one that has built-in wireless as that will be very handy for travelling if you are ever in a wifi zone. Almost any laptop made in the last 5 years should also have a DVD player so you can watch a movie on the go.
For online security purposes though, I would get one that has at least WindowsXP installed and if you get one used, make sure the hardware is capable (1.5 GHz with 256MB RAM) of running XP comfortably since you can take advantage of current security features when on the internet and it is worth paying for if you bank or do the bills online.
If you get an old laptop with Windows 98 (too old) or is too slow to run XP, then I would not recommend using it on the internet since Microsoft no longer supports Win98 or older and you will be open to a bunch of security bugs that can't be fixed.
The other option is you can buy a Mac notebook. If used, get one made in the last 2 years with OSX installed.
For PC based laptops go with Dell. For Mac there is only one choice but they cost a little more on average.

mac's are good if you're doing graphic/video type work, from what ive read they are a lil more reliable, "windows type" are cheaper, you can get refurbished dell's off thier website, my old roommate had one that he got for like around 500 that worked well for him.. i have a toshiba laptop thats about 3 years old that i have had many problems with so i would recommend a toshiba, but i dont know new ones might be better... well hope that helps

if you just want something cheap = dell.
if you want a laptop that will last with easy-to-use software, virus-free, media driven, perfect for internet, movies, and music, then get a macbook.
