Half of Americans don't even vote, so you can't really say that all Americans are either conservative or liberal. There are a lot that really don't care either way!

It seems like everyone's either conservative or liberal because that's the way the media portrays it. They always show "two sides" to every issue. They always have two guests to debate, a "conservative" and a "liberal." The media never say, "You can rely on us to show all seventeen sides of this issue," or "We've got guests today on the left, on the right, in the middle, on the side, up above, down below, and in between." The conservative/liberal split is largely a media fabrication, but unfortunately a lot of people do buy into it.

Oftentimes being conservative or liberal has more to do with personality than politics. If someone's attracted to a certain type of people or a certain type of lifestyle, that's the basis for choosing one or the other.

Believing in negative stereotypes about the other side has a lot to do with it also. Too many people are conservative because they "hate liberals" and vice versa. They identify themselves based on what they're against instead of what they're for.

It'd be nice if American politics were based on ideas instead of personality, but our national elections aren't much different from high school student government elections. They're popularity contests where people vote for whoever they like best, instead of whoever has the best ideas.

AMERICANS aren't 'either conservative or liberal.' THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IN AMERICA is. The reason for this is that in this country, you have to have MONEY and LOTS OF IT in order to buy enough TV time to have a campaign where the people will even know who the hell the candidate is. The well established 2-party system is the only camp that can afford 60 seconds of ad-space on NBC. Joe schmo do-gooder cannot.

America is FULL of individuals. Individuals who are forced to play a busted game in a system that is failing them. Time to stand up and do something about CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM.

I was taught that the political spectrum in the US is not one-dimensional but two-dimensional. One axis is personal freedom and the other axis is economic freedom. Liberals want personal freedoms (like freedom of speech) and economic control (like social programs). Conservatives want personal control (like Patriot Act) and economic freedom (tax breaks). The other two sectors are Libertarians (both personal and economic freedoms) and Authoritarians (personal and economic control). In the middle are the centrists. Liberals and Conservatives are just the most numerous and that's why you only hear about those. But there are other parties with other goals, like the Green party! They have some sensible proposals, too bad they'll only win when hell freezes over.

The thing is, even if you identify differently on various issues (for example, pro-choice but anti-gay marriage or some such mixture) the current system is such that those who must classify will always find a place to "put" you - instead of far-right or far-left, you will be called "left-leaning" or "progressive conservative" or some such label.

I wish there was more represenatation on less extreme levels. Extremes are never good. Ferris Bueller had it right - -isms suck.

Most countries have multiple party systems giving the people more choices. A third party would do wonders for the US. But the people in power have a good thing going for them and they will avoid that at all costs.

I am an independent at heart, but SURPRISE! There are two main parties. You're gonna have to pick one.

And since the Republicans have violated the constitution less times than the Democrats, I tend to vote for them.

People in the middle of the road get run over.

I'm about:

80% with the conservatives, mostly economics, anti-abortion and embryonic stem cell research, defense and war on terror.

10% middle of the road (environment)

10% liberal (gay rights)

I do not agree with all of what the Republican party has to offer, but as long as the Democrats are so hell-bent on the USA pulling out of Iraq I will support the Republican party.
