depends on the system. My friend has 12 hard disk installed. My computer can fit 6, but I want to have 2 dvd drives, so the max for me would be 4.

It depends upon the power supply unit installed in the computer. Bigger the power supply more the hard disk drives can be installed. But usually one or two drives are used. Visit www.dell.com and check out the maximum drives they offer for a single pc.

You can have up to 4, but this would be without having any cd/dvd player.

There are usually 2 connectors (each have 2 plugs, primary and slave) for hard drives which are also used for cd/dvd players and a few others.

Your mother board provides two ATA IDE Interfaces. The 80 pin ribbon cable has two HDD Connectors. So maximum you can install 4 drives (this includes CD Drives+DVDs etc.)

As many as the slots and connectors allow for. Then again you can always hook up a few external hard drives, with the limitation again of the number of connections and the power available.

Generally you can have 4 IDE drives. They can be hard drives or CD's or any combination of those. With SCSI you can have as many as 8 drives with most SCSI controllers...some allow 16.
