My Grandfather also earned a purple heart, he survived several ships destroyed and floated amongst sharks for days in the Philippines. He was a Chief in the Navy, stationed in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked, he lost a lung and several ribs when he was blown from his ship. He returned stateside, refused to leave the Navy and retired after 20 years.

You know...We called him "The General" or "General" in the 70"s because a guard at the Navy Base said " good morning General Sir" and waived him through the gates, mistaking the sticker on his bumper ( which had 4 stars on it ) for a retired Army Generals sticker. He was a wonderful man, pretty bigoted at times, but he saw many horrors and came through it okay. Never gruff or loud, always whistling and laughing. I'm 51 he passed away 20 years ago. Thank you for reminding me.

I had a who knows how many times "great" grandfather who fought in the Civil War! :) My dad served a little while in Korea, and my late father-in-law served in WWII.

Cheers, K
