I want to make the neck of my bass slipperier (if that's a word. Well, it is now). I think it's bad for it, and so does my friend. What do you think?

Yes, I mean the backside, not the fretboard.

To make it slippery, use furniture wax, not polish. Pledge, for instance. Use it on the backside of the neck, because that is where the friction comes from.
To make your strings slippery, fast fret works, or since you are playing bass, go to the music store and ask for tapewound strings, not roundwound. You will not believe how slinky and slidey they are!

the problem with furniture polish is that it often contains wax; this can build up and become sticky which is exactly what you dont want (i actually sand off most of the finish on my necks, as i like to feel the wood). I assume we are talking about the back of the neck, and not the fingerboard; using products like pledge. etc has really gunked up the fingerboard on many an instrument. products like fingerease spray are a much better choice, and can be used on both sides of the neck.

I cannot hurt it, but when you clean it off and you leave the left over residue it can make you neck warp, just like weather can, the best thing to use is the cleaning stuff from music store or musicians friend, the fast fret works awesome!
