Our government no longer represents its people in the United States. It dictates to us how things are going to be, and tells us what is best for us. They only pretend to care around election time, so that they become the lesser of the two evils to get elected.
People hate that, but love the freedom and culture (yes, american culture) that exists here.

I think the election where our current president was elected the first time shows that we do not elect our own government. It has taken over itself and pushed the American people out! I'm personally outraged and I don't understand why anything has not been done. I love my country. I got more opportunity and chance for a great life there than anywhere else in the world. However, my dislike for the government is almost as strong. They need to do whats right for our country and leave the rest of the world alone.

First off--the government is NOT the country---the country is the people--the way of life--the total package of all the things that this place is--and it is overall--- a damn fine place !!!
But--over and over the politicians that are up for the vote---plain and simple---lie---people vote on them for what they hear that sounds good and for what they think these people are going to do--then when they get elected---there they go--off on a private agenda and doing all the things that they said they were against when they were campaigning---then there is this thing within the last few years where it has changed from the ----of the people thing to---we the leaders kind of thing----the people who are in control of the government have the view that simply because they have been voted into office---that it is the will of the people that THEY do whatever the hell they want to----and they do----so you have a lot of people hacked to the teeth about this because it just keeps happening and it's getting plenty damn old and ils causing a major rift between the people in power and the people who are having to live with the decisions that these dorks are making !!! Enough Said ???

Yep, that's a good question. I don't hate my President or the system we use. The people you hear from are the ones who believe everything they hear and just repeat it. I could give them a giant list of things that our current President did and the best most can come up with is, "Bush sucks." That's intelligence for you.
Anyway we can say that and not get sent to jail or executed for it. I wonder how those same people would feel if they lived in Iraq when Saddam ruled and when they made a joke about his Mother saw their whole family tortured before them right before they themselves got killed? That did happen way to some unfortunate soul. Even their children were tortured by electric drills in their joints (shoulders, knees and elbows) before they were killed. Then their head was put on a stick in their front yard as a warning to other people. Would they think Bush sucked then?

It's not just Americans. I remember former president De Gaulle of France who said that France is a beautiful country, too bad there are so many French. Which is more of the same but than reversed.
Presidents and governments are elected on basis of their promises and they have a hard time keeping them. So maybe if we find clever ways to keep them to their promises the statement may change over time.

I don't know the exact figure, but GWB got only 40 something percent of the vote, and being that only half or so of US population votes, then I'm guessing only about 2 in 10 people actually agree with the guy. So of course most residents are going to love their country, but not all of them are going to support the government.

It's actually "I love my country, but I hate THIS government". And no, I didn't select my government. 45% of the people and 55% of the supreme court selected my government.

Usually they mean they don't like the government officials, and the things that our government has been doing recently, which they feels is going against 'the country'. They love their country b/c it has a good premise and a good basis, but they feel like the officials and politics corrupt it.
In other words, they think things could be better, and they blame government officials for screwing it up w/ politics.

yes, but majoritarian democracy can be somewhat harsh to the minority. so the minority, embittered and resentful at being sidelined and not having its viewpoint considered, has been relegated to making trite statements such as the one in your question.
it's much easier to claim to "hate the government" rather than to do anything constructive to change the situation, or rather than simply accepting that a majority of the country does not agree with them.

I guess the minority says that then, huh? Because not everyone voted for the president. It's just the majority of people, or at least it's supposed to be.
