If so how do I get started? I got this older computer, and wanted to learn.. Will it download and install over windows?

I had problems running Linux on an old system. Usually, the display device driver is the one that acts up. If you're lucky, you would be able to run linux. The fastest way to find out if your system will run linux is to run it off a cd directly. I recommend Mandriva Linux for testing.

am using RedHat 9 linux on my Thinkpad 600E(P2 266) with 256MB RAM smoothly

Sure it will work but the versions should be 7.0 or 9.0 not RHEL 4
