I am an employee of a small town police department.. Of course our department is governed by the City itself. The City consists of Water Office, City Office Staff, City Waterworks and roads, Fire Department, and Police Department. For over a year now, Our( police) budget keeps getting cut lower and lower, our overtime, supplies, etc but all other departments are gaining money. Our cars are in awful shape and we even lost 2 to sale but Waterworks Department has gotten new equipment, etc every year. Alot more things have been taken away from us and cut but too numerous to mention. Oour Cheif feels it is because the Mayor wants him to retire but.... Is this legal for the City to do to us.. Do we have any rights and how can we fight it?

No you have no recourse for this besides proposing increased funding for the police department.

Budget cuts are completely at the discretion of the city government. If you want to throw more money towards the police what you need to do is start an initiative in which citizens apply pressure to councilmen. Or what you can do is to start a motion to put a financial ballot question up for voting during the next election that would increase funding for the police force. The realm you're in is not legal - it's political.

Yes, the city sets the budgets of the departments. The only way to "fight" this is to start a blue flu campaign or slow down on the ticket writing until the city hall gets the message about where most of the money comes from.

This sounds like a political question. If people feel that the police department is not getting adequate funding, their recourse is to elect a new mayor who promises to restore the budget.

obvious that the mayor and your chief doesn't see eye to eye and truthfully, it seems your mayor is gripping the axe on your department. file a complaint on your state court. unless the mayor also has some control on it, an investigation will be conducted. state your complaints in black and white outside the jurisdiction of your city mayor. also, set an appointment with your conressman. ask his side on the issue. true, it's illegal to slice your budget (since most of the city's income comes from yours) and as i understand, there is a certain percentage given to the best gainer of a county or city department. if you know any public defender vocal against your mayor, sought his help. he can raise this issue to no limits..... believe me, he can.
