Know your grammar, definitely.
Learn to do voices - different voices for different characters
Speak loudly, clearly, enunciate
Props not necessary if all of the above are used

for effective storytelling you need to keep these things in mind

know the story well
speak clearly
pronounce the words well
let your face and voice tell the story much as the words.
allow your body to become involved in the story
only use props if they are required otherwise let the listeners imagine the pictures they way they want to.
give your audience some credit for knowing some things.. ie. if telling story to grade three kids about dogs don't spell out the obvious... like that dogs bark or other stuff they could reasonably be expected to know.... it is better to presume they know a bit about it...
involve your audience in the story... ask them questions.. allow them to ad lib bits and pieces to the story...
