I was thinking about which bands were the most influential in rock music and I think you can see the influence of those two bands in the music after them more than any other bands. The Who might qualify as the forebearers of punk.

Does anyone agree?

Please ignore the typo, I know it's Led Zeppelin.

There are significant bands in all sub-genres of rock and pop music. The Beatles and Led Zep are certainly the most influential for their particular sub-genres, namely pop and blues rock. Other bands that can be considered to be the "most" influential in their specific categories would probably be, IMHO:

The Ramones - punk
Nirvana - Grunge
N.W.A - rap
MC Hammer - "lite" rap - (almost doesn't exist anymore)
Boston - Arena rock
Elton John - piano-based rock (a good argument could be made for Billy Joel as well)
Bob Dylan - folk, then electric folk
Jefferson Airplane - psychedelic rock
Roxy Music - glam rock (a case can be made for the New York Dolls as well... Roxy's later incarnation was so very different from glam that I'm almost leaning toward the Dolls on this one)
The Clash - political rock (the flag was later picked up by Rage Against the Machine)

Those are my picks... anyone else?

I agree, but I would also put Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Pearl Jam on the list.

Both were, but another just as important is The Who. If you're looking for one of the influences for punk, there ya go.....
