Yes, Rory is a nickname. She was named after her mother. Plus Lorelei (the mom) was named after her grandmother who was also named Lorelei. So really, there are 3 people with the same name.

the mother (Lorelei) claims that she called her daughter with her name because men ofter call their sons after themselves and she wondered why women never do the same with their daughters so she called her daughter Lorelei . but to distinguish the girl they call her Rory

yea they call her that for short because the daughter and the mother both have the same first names so not to get confused or anything they shortened it for the daughter.
