It depends on what you mean by breeds. There really aren't standards defining guppy breeds like there are for dogs. Mixing different type of guppies is pretty much the same thing that happens when you breed 2 different breeds of dog. Unlike dogs the more interesting traits are recessive. So most guppy muts are not very interesting.

There is only one "breed" of guppy. They have many different colors and fin shapes but they are all the same breed.

Varieties not breeds. It just refers to their colors and the shape of their tails. There are many different varieties. And nothing "happens" if different ones mate.

there are about more than 200 kinds of purebreeds. they are obtained by generations selective inbreeding. if you were to mix the purebreeds, their offsprings would inherit qualities of both parents.
