This has been such a struggle for black people for such a long time. It initially started back in slavery time, because generally lighter complected people were considered good enough to work in the "big house" therefor, over time, lighter skinned slaves felt they were on some level better than darker people. It is a sad struggle, and unfortunately, in western culture, it is seen as ugly to be a dark person. Being dark certainly is not ugly..its beautiful, yet society has led us to think that the darker you are, the less desirable and beautiful you are. It is simply untrue. A lot of black people even observe how some white people tan their skin..which seems paradoxical since it is chiefly the western culture that has disgraced having dark skin.
Feel beautiful in your skin, because it is.

I have absolutely no idea why there is even a problem among lighter and darker skinned African Americans and other groups of people. I'm sorry they acted like that to you. I am a light skinned white girl and I don't see why people of the same group(black, white,Asian, etc) are hating on each other.. sorry. There is always going to be somebody that doesn't like you for no "real" reason.

They were jealous because the lifeguard was talking to you and they were not acquainted with you. So they made snide remarks. People tend to do that. If you were white skinned, they would have criticized your hair or another of your characteristics which they do not have. Skin color is a big difference so that was what they came up with first.

That is something that I never thought about. In South Africa I understand there is a definite divide by white, mixed race and black people. Each have thier place in social order.
Is this a situation where everyone has to look down on others to feel good about themselves. That is a poor comment on society.

That "light" is better attitude dates all the way back to slavery. Dark-skinned blacks were treated like mules and made to labor in the fields all day whereas the light-skinned blacks were treated more like house cats and got to work inside the home. Sadly, that way of thinking has been passed down from generation to generation.
Edit: Michelle beat me to it =)~

i imagine darkish pores and skin is wonderful! i'm no longer only keeping that. i'm very diminished, and do not intend on going to an undesirable tanning sales area anytime quickly. That reported, i love darker pores and skin. i imagine we are born with what we are born with. I had commented on a youtube video of Tyra and a style who changed into keeping how she in no way felt incredibly because she changed into darkish. I said in my remark that being white, besides the very incontrovertible fact that idealized by ability of society through the years, isn't something to be valued anymore. Or, a minimum of, it should not be valued anymore. pores and skin colour won't be able to outline someone. I said the way it sucks that we get moles, sunlight burns (shiny red tomato pores and skin( that peels), and turn pink from exercising. i imagine there are alluring women human beings in each ethnic crew, and as i had reported in preserving with Tyra's video, "the victorian era is over, so why are we nonetheless obsessed on diminished pores and skin." My aspect is that you're acceptable only the way you're. it really is like the blonde vs. brunette debate. There are blondes with prettier faces/ brunettes/ red heads/ black hair...and so on. finally, only a added remark...my sister's perfect chum has wonderful brown pores and skin, and feels like a style. i imagine it truly is a shame that there are one of those vast quantity of those who decide in accordance to pores and skin colour even as it really is one of those trivial topic.

Worrying about how much light a person's skin reflects has to count as one of the most useless preocupations on this Earth.
Probably they were just jealous that you had the lifeguard and were saying any mean thing to introvert and upset you. (looks like it worked, unfortunately.)
People like that usually have only one life skill which they are any good at: converting oxygen into carbon dioxide.
Next time, just realize that you are only seeing human trash and ignore them, its the best revenge!

because they were jealous and that was the only thing that they could comment on.....they were really jealous of you....but you're right...they don't have the right to make comments like that.....I'm sure it made them look foolish in the eyes of the lifeguard.
I'm a white male...I don't think skin colour has anything to do with beauty...except maybe enhance it sometimes.

It's like "bullying" those that get "picked on" pick on others and so on.
Rise above it, read Dr. Suess "The Sneetches" for a simple but cute analogy...
You're beautiful inside and out- don't let the "haters" drag you down, sweetie...
