No. Subaru has invested much money in their R&D, and I wouldn't imagine why would they put Porsche engine into their car. The Boxer engine was utilized as a means of lowering the center of gravity of the car.

When I bought my Subaru the sales guy said it had a Porsche engine. He's lying of course, it has a boxer engine design, but that's like saying a car has a V8. It just describes the layout of the pistons. I think Subaru is encouraging their sales people to call it a Porsche boxer engine knowing ignorant people will confuse it with Porsche Boxster.

The Subaru make and Porsche make both make the "H" design or horizontally-opposed engine. This allows for a transaxle to mounted on the back of the engine to make the engine to transmission ratio more effective. This makes the transfer from the engine to the differential much more powerful to the rear wheels or all wheels. That is why you see Porcshe's blow you away on the freeway at lightning speeds. The light weight and the powerful engine and transmission makes this car very fast. Also, the "H" design is also more effective than the "I" design engines because instead of the pistons and rods going upwards, the "H" design engine is laying flat on the side. Making it work alot less and put alot less stress on ur pistons and rods.

No just the term Boxer Engine. That is a horizonally opposed four or six cyl or more cyls. engine with over head cams. Ferrarri 12 cyl.365 boxer or 512 12 cyl larger motor boxer and Porsche Boxer,911, 996 and more, Subaru WRX and 6 cyl Tribeca all use this design. Either air or liquid cooled.

The two companies, Porche and Subaru may have shared some ideas long ago, but they manufacture their own engines. The older VW Beetles and Buses used boxers. Some BMW motorcycles and the Honda Goldwing 4 and 6 motorcycles are boxers.
