I appreciate all the answers. Wow !it's a tough one!!!

But I am not absoluteluely sure if fish sleep or not yet. Can anybody suggest any research in this area?

The answers are eye openers. I thought it would be a slam dunk answer. Apparently not so.

Yes fish do sleep or at least the fish I am familiar with do, for instance a parrot fish exudes a thick mucus around its body to suppress its odor and presence don't get one for your salt water aquarium unless it is very large and well filtered, another example is some forms of wrasse fish wriggle into sand and bury themselves to avoid predators and some sharks do settle down and don't have to keep swimming to rest, I'm sure certain that some creatures don't sleep as we know it. Its a mysterious world isn't it?Also fish have special senses for finding hiding fish its like a natures evolutionary one ups man ship for survival. cool!

Sleeping is a process to allow the brain to review what it learned during the day and facilitate memory (dreams are essentially the random play of daily events, arranged is what seems like a crazy story) Experiments have shown that people who are prevented from dreaming become forgetful.

Now what does this have to do with fish? Well, they are not very smart, are they? And the do not learn a lot of things in a day. So they don't really need sleep.

It is not only fish that don't sleep. Giraffe are known to sleep at most 30 minutes per night, total (and only in one minute naps each time).

I have a fish tank at home, and no matter what time of night I get up, they are still swimming around. In the dark. Fish don't sleep. Dolphins only half sleep (they have one half of their brain sleeping while the other half is awake, taking turns).

Nature is really full of strange and interesting facts.

Fish do sleep in some form, whether slowing down or coming to a complete stop, whether hiding or doing it right in the open.

Yes. Fishes do sleep, but with their eyes wide open.
Their predators will think that they're awake, so then they (hopefully) won't get eaten.
