Good answers, however, here's another reason.
Blood pressure.
If this is a constant problem for you, then I would suggest getting checked out and making sure you don't possibly have a high BP.

1. It's not life threatening so don't fret.
2. Almost anything can cause a blood vessel to pop. Some examples would be: Sneezing, Coughing, Riding in an Airplane, etc.
3. There is no way to prevent something like that happening. . .Sorry!

It's happened during two periods of stress for me so .... I would imagine your blood pressure going up could burst a weak blood vessel in the eye. It can also be caused by trauma or an injury of the eye.
I think if it continues , you are supposed to see your physician.

No special reason. Maybe a sneeze, bending far over, too much aspirin??? Any way, the good news is that it will go away by itself!! It looks dreadful, but not to worry. If it happens a lot - then ask your doctor.
