You dont lower it enough to scrape on things... There is a point where the lowering will do nothing, so dont go too low. Go diagonally over speed bumps and watch the road... Again, dont go too low, damaging the bottom of the car is not worth an extra .05 g's on the track (the look may be worth it though :)

By simply not hitting anything. Lowering a car for looks? Lowering a car for handling? I lower my car and re-align it to keep the tires from wearing. The factory engineers set up camber toe in and caster for stock ride height. Problems will happen if you just lower a car with out alignment too

The stock profile was designed to give the car the best handling and drivability. Changing the ride height will make the care ride terrible, corner horrible, bottom out easily, stop less efficiently, and can cause unpredictable and even dangerous handling characteristics. Why would you want to do this?
