people take drugs, dispite billions being spent on the police and various other agencies people still take drugs. The people who supply drugs (hard drugs) are very nasty people and are alledgedly responsible for 90% of the uk's gun market. Why not legalise the lot, tax it all, use the taxes to pay for rehab and policing in other areas, reserve prison for violent or victim crimes.. to me keeping drugs illegal makes no sense, its the same kind of bizarre legal standpoint that makes suicide and euthenasia (its late and my spelling aint too good) illegal, what do you think? u never know maybe if we lock up one more crack head, everyone worldwide will suddenly discover smoking crack is wrong and give it up? bizzare

Here's some numbers:

"According to a 1998 report from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the number of heroin addicts in Holland has almost tripled since the liberalization of drug policies

- Similarly, the 1998 European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addictions overview report states that drug-related arrests in the Netherlands were up over 40 percent in the last three years, with the main offense being trafficking in so called hard drugs

- According to a 1998 report by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, when the so-called Dutch "coffee shops," started selling marijuana in small quantities, use of the drug more than doubled between 1984 and 1996 among 18 to 25 year olds. "

Since when did government take on itself the responsibility to control what goes in to our bodies ? If that is not the nanny state I don't know what is.

The increase in heroin use that is recorded in Holland (whose population is quite stable) is explained by the fact that In Holland there has been increased police activity to stamp out more dealers getting involved. But the actual number of users has stayed fairly constant. And in Holland a high percentage of users have public access to programmes that can deal with their addiction.

The use of marijuana in Holland has caused not a single death since records were kept. Unlike alcohol (which is responsible for deaths and violence as everyone knows). After decades of blatant misinformation the Dutch are far more relaxed about this soft drug.

Surely the truth is that adults should be free to choose what they do with their own lives. And, as for children, of course they should be taught the evils of addiction as they already are about alcohol and tobacco. Please., please, give human beings a break - give them back their own choice on such issues. Let them judge and make decisions for themselves. The world will NOT end if they choose one way or the other. It ends only if the current situation (controlled by vested interests) continues to make drugs an illegal activity.

For the simple reason that hard drugs, such as scag shouldn't be freely available to pre-teens to inject in the playground, like some will invariably smoke fags. There are always going to be stupid people willing to try it, even after being educated and told it is 'illegal' and 'ruinous', but to offer them no protection or deterrent, only rehab, is like telling someone that they will receive 'good medical care, should you survive', before letting them jump off a roof.

Nonsense.

While I disagree with the use of drugs, I support the freedom of choice. Legalising drugs may reduce drug related crime, but may increase the availability, and hence use of drugs. In turn, having a detrimental effect on society, increasing theft and mugging as more people need to feed their habit.

Does it work in Holland ?

If drugs were legitimised law and order would go to POT. Society as a whole would misfunction. People need to go about their daily routine in a sober state, or nothing would make sense, nothing would get done, and industry would grind to a halt.
