I've been working in this company for 2 months. This co-worker, through out my time, express his dislike of working at the company. Every morning he would come with a bad attitude and say this and that about the company. He look frustrated. He said it wasn't about the money, he just wanted out. When he resign b/c he had another job offer. He gave two weeks noticed but after all the drama, they made him a 90k counter offer. He was promoted to supervisor, now he walks around like he's the ****. We all have to work 45 hrs M-F but he gets to work 40hrs M-Thur. I don't think this is fair. Now he gives orders. What do you think.

I think that your co-worker might just be a truly unhappy and a tad fake. Apparently, it may or may not have been about the money, but if it wasn't then that will surface soon enough. However, he might be dealing with some type of situation in his life where he is just looking for anything to make him happy. Being negative might be his way of trying to bring others down at the time before the promotion. Some people are negative and unhappy and feel if they are everyone around should be too. That might have been his temporary fix at that point. Now that he is into the money he must be trying to buy his happiness. Happiness can't be purchased. It comes from within. There is no amount of money I would take if I were truly unhappy. Life is too short and money is really nothing and definitely doesn't make a person happy.
Life isn't fair a lot of times. Just try to do the best you can and don't envy him because I can promise he is no better than you, he just puts on a front in an attempt to feel good about whatever it is he may be dealing with that is causing him insecurity. Hang in there and be a positive thinker. It will all pan out and you will be his boss if you have a good attitude and work hard.

Sometimes ppl get challenge by new colleagues, from what i see in this scenario of yours.Listen carefully,... he did say he need a way out...but not the money, right? so, i supposed he needed something more,..... I'm guessing is authority.
As far as I'm concern, authority comes bigger with a tag, it's called responsibility, and to show what it takes to be one, you've gotta have it.
If i were you, i would not be so worry about it, if you are able to show something more of what this"whiner" colleague of yours
has, .....then it comes a time that you should called for a raise yourself!
In my opinion, being promoted only when someone is in desperate move of leaving the company has never been a good sign,.....and i meant both the company and the people whose working there, seriously, to think again, i see your company does not value people accordingly.
My advise is to look for an organization which evaluate workers often, and have their monthly, if not, a quarterly basis review of both the employees and employers for an equal employment.

maybe he felt like he did not get recognition he deserved after 2 years and he felt so abused he was even willing to leave to prove a point.
maybe management values his work and he has done things for the Co. that you do not know about. seems like he has paid his dues. 2 years.
now, the large raise may be exaggerated. maybe he just wants to justify his stay. you know: "they made him an offer he couldn't refuse" sort of deal.
wouldn't you stay if they offered you a promotion and a raise?
i would!

I know you want someone to agree with you, but I cant... Life isnt fair - and work certainly isnt... The company decided that the co-worker is worth giving him those benefits so he deserves them...

He took the risk of finding another job, and it paid off at your company - you and everyone else have the same options open to you...

That situation sucks to be blunt. But it sounds as though this guy knew his value (worth) to the company, and did what he had to do to get ahead. As far as not working the whole week, well I dont know many supervisors/managers who do. And last but not least, people like that are kind of sneaky and snakes. watch what u say around him.

Sounds like the squeeky wheel got the oil, BUT it must have been attached to a decent automobile, or they would not have asked him to stay on. Maybe he was just using you as a soundboard. I guess you just do your job, the one you were hired for, and be polite. You don't have to like it, but you ought to be polite.
