Sorry to say but having and emachine makes you a little more screwed then others, there just about the worst computer you could buy... i'm sorry. Having said that, emachine cases tend to be small, so you will probably have to buy a smaller more compact mother board.. Also your emachine probably has built on board video, meaning your new one will have to aswell, or you need to buy a new video card.
As for reinstalling... You dont HAVE to, but it is best for performance reasons, but you dont have to, and it wont nessiarly hurt you not to.
Hope this helps
My suggestions buy a new case(with powersupply, board and do a transplant, i garantee you will be more happy with less emachine parts

If you really did fry your motherboard (questionable -- why do you think this?) you might have to buy a replacement from eMachines or else you're pretty much looking at replacing what amounts to a majority of your computer because often, major manufacturers like eMachines don't use standard parts, so if you upgrade, you'll have to change the case as well, which means rebuilding your machine's hardware and this is not to be taken lightly.
Also, if you upgrade, make sure your upgrade MB uses the same memory type as your old one, or you'll be buying new memory, too.
Anyway, if you did fry the motherboard, good luck, but be sure it's not something else first!

you will need to buy a new operating system as the license you got is only good for emachine, by the time you buy windows and a new motherboard you will have $200 invested provided everything else works, many times the motherboards are not standard size so a replacement wont fit in the case, unless the computer is real new with an intel with a lga775 socket and SATA connections and PCI express 16; you would be better off to buy a new computer.

If you upgrade the motherboard chances are you are moving to another socket for the CPU. When you upgrade the socket for the CPU then you must buy a new CPU. Im not saying that this is exactly the case here but I would look into that and be aware. And your emachines disk will probably not install onto a new machine. Looks to be $ 400 DELL time :)

The only thing you may have to do is re-activate Windows XP. That can be done by phone while in front of your computer. When you boot, a screen will appear with options on it. Choose the phone option. A new window appears with a series of 5 digit numbers in six or seven groups. You'll have to read these off into the phone to do the re-activate process. Then Microsoft's teleoperator will give you a series of numbers in six or seven groups that you will have to type into boxes on the computer screen. After your finished, you will have updated Microsoft as to the configuration of your computer. And will be recognized as a registered user, eligible for Windows XP updates.

yes thats always a good idea..i doubt the restore disk will work with a new board ...you will most likely get a message that this disk is intended for emachines yadayadayada ... and upgrading boards your gonna have to get somthing with a cpu socket that supports your cpu so that might restrict you...but somthing from asus probably...i would go to overclock.net or http://www.ocforums.com/index.php?
or some other technical forum where theres alot of upgrading going on and ask for some recommendations for the parts you have .... thats what i would do ... those guys are very knowledgeable about parts for sure, and what your options would be...

you can replace it with any board with the same specs, but XP will not boot. You will have to do a reapir install, because there are too many hardware changes, unless you put the same board in. when you try to activate, it probably will not, you will then have to go to activate by phone, and tell the person you had to change the motherboard, it is your key number, it is not installed on ohter computers, and they will have you change your system ID. I have to do it about once a week

Yeah you will have to as when you fried your old mother board you no longer have XP or any system. If your computer is over 5 years old I would just buy another one unless it's really a high price computer.
