Why still believe in it ?

Thank you.

I think the biggest problem in the macro-evolution theory is that, as far as I can see, scientists are not formulating a theory around evidence. Rather, they have this seemingly nice theory, and try to make the evidence fit somewhere into that theory instead of looking at the evidence with an unbiased eye.

I thought someone above say that all science about theory. This is not true. Science seeks to KNOW, not merely to theorize. In order to know, science must seek the causes of things, because we "know" something when we know it through its causes. So scientists can collect all the data they desire, but it does no good unless they give an unbiased analysis of the data in order to determine the CAUSE of why whatever they found is so.

Because ALL science is just a theory. You can't prove a theory, ANY theory because that is what science is about. Theories are simplified models for reality. You make statements about how things should behave under certain conditions and when given those conditions your statements should hold. But you can't prove that something holds under ALL conditions.

Experiments test the circumstances under which the theories hold. Theories are verified, not proven, by experiments.

This doesn't mean that theories are invalid, but just that we can't know for sure that they always hold. The car you drive, the cell phone you talk on, even the computer you are looking at right now were able to be built because of theories about how the world works. Theories, though unproven, were still accurate enough to accomplish great things.

So if you are just tossing the Theory of Evolution into the dumpster simply because it is a theory, then there is no reason for you to believe in gravity or electricity either since they are also "nothing but theories."

Do you know that heliocentrism is just a theory? Why still believe in it?

I think you should try to understand science better. The most important works of science are always theories, since they tie together many different observations. To use heliocentrism, as an example, it is a pretty strong theory based on the numerous observations made about the earth's relationship to the sun. Likewise, evolution is a pretty strong theory made on the basis of the numerous observations.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming, and I don't think you should get caught up on the use of the term "theory." You believe countless theories in the ordinary course of a day, which you could never "prove." But you believe them because they are the best explanation for the relationship among the observations you make. For example, your belief that other people have minds is only a "theory" and not an observable "fact," but yet you still believe it, because it is the best and simplest explanation of the numerous observations you make.

What is an honest attempt by science to distinguish between observed data and the explanations for relationships among those observations gets distorted by creationists who rely on misunderstandings and ambiguations to establish their argument.

I would strongly suggest doing some reading about how science and philosophy of science work.

Yes, evolution is a theory, but so is gravity.

Theories are proposed descriptions that are capable of producing repeated similar observations.

Facts are observations.

Theories and facts are not the same thing. Gravity is not a 'fact'. Gravity is a theory. When a glass falls off my table, that is a 'fact'. I use the 'theory' of gravity to explain the fact.

Such it is with evolution. It is not possible to observe evolution (it has already taken place over millions of years and we barely live 100). Similarly, it is not possible to observe Adam and Eve either. It is possible to postulate conclusions with the 'theory of evolution' and reproduce those results, consistently.

Unfortunately, since we can't observe Adam and Eve, and the whole Genesis story, then it too is not a 'fact'. Furthermore, the story of Genesis probably isn't a 'theory' either, unless someone can show how conclusions from the story can be reproduced.

The point is this: evolution belongs to the realm of science. The Genesis story belongs to the realm of religious belief. The two are incongruous with each other and serve two completely different purposes.

One should not use science to disprove religion any more than one should use religion to disprove science. They are not one in the same, nor are they contradictory.

First, because your statement misunderstands the word 'theory'. Like many words, this word can have many meanings depending upon the context.

In common usage, where words are often used casually, 'theory' is often is used to refer to an uncertain set of ideas. However, in science, terms are much more specific -- a 'theory' is a set of analysis and/or abstract principles surrounding a body of facts.

Look it up in a dictionary (such as http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/theory )

Science is basically the process of many people working to discover how things work, by observation, experimentation, research, and generating explanatory ideas. When an idea to explain something is first considered, it is called a 'conjecture' -- summarized as "this is interesting, it looks like it might work like this, but we need to find more proof". If the idea is interesting, other scientists will take up the challenge and seek more evidence.

Upon doing more experiments, observations, research, etc., and finding good confirming evidence, the idea becomes a 'hypothesis' -- summarized as "here is an idea of how this works, and some good evidence, are there any holes in it?". At this point, other researchers would do deeper research to discover more evidence pro or con.

Only when the available body of evidence becomes so broad as to be overwhelming, and the emerging set of analyses and principles are refined by the many facts, does the explanation merit being called a 'theory'.

'Evolution' is a fact (actually, many facts). The 'Theory of Evolution' is the set of analyses and principles explaining the mechanism behind those facts.

You would not say "...Gravity is nothing but a theory..." because scientists are still working on details of the Theory of Gravity; you would not say "...Music is nothing but a theory..." because people are still advancing Music Theory; you would not say "...Numbers are noting but a theory..." because mathematicians are still working on Number Theory. Evolution is no different.

I don't think you would say that "Gravity is just a theory" and step off a tall building. But, you would be better off doing that than telling a doctor to treat your infection with drugs designed before the evolutionary theory guided drug design. The bugs have long since EVOLVED resistance to the old drugs, and you would likely have a long agonizing death as the evolved bugs ignored the drugs and rampaged through your body. Better to challenge the Theory of Gravity and take the quick splat ;)

I might also add that I find no conflict between science and faith in God. We are supposed to have faith without proof -- if God gave proof of His existence, how could we be free to believe? Your question makes me wonder why is your faith so weak?

You don't even know what a theory is.

A scientific theory is a hypothesis that has been proven 1000s of times. The only reason it is a theory is because you never know when the next results or observations prove it false. So everything is a theory. Some more evident than others. It won't end up being fantasy, you apparently don't know much about how evolution works if you think it could end up being fantasy.

I dont think that evoluion is just a theory, science is based upon facts and upon concrete proofs and the theory of evolution is proven by such standards. One cannot ignore this aspect.

Science is not something which should stand as a denouncer of the existence of God, rather it is just a tool to unfathom the marvels of God. The theory of evolution can rightly fit into the creation theory that is explained in the holy scriptures all over the world. Bible says in psalms

"For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night."

So if for God a thousand years meant only like a watch of night, for humans how many years could it mean? How many thousands of years make the 7 days during which God completed the entire creation? or why should one ignore this scripture from the Bible that demand our attention?

Why cant science and religion join hands? Isnt it just the ignorance and a lack of a proper understanding of the holy scriptures that had lead to this controversy? Science opens the door way to God and more so, to his marvels and wonders.. So whats the whole idea for denouncing the evolution theory when there are enough proofs and again whats the point in denouncing God when science only points more and more to the existence of a super intelligence ?

So you posted another question a couple of days ago saying that all atheists are fools. I don't believe in God but I still tried very hard to give a non-biased answer. In the end I wasn't taking side, I simply stated where mankind is at right now and why we would not be here without the progress in science and technology.

So, upon reading all the answers posted by users, you realize that no one agreed with you simply because you are trying to shove religion in other people's throat, and claim that your God is the only truth and science must be false. Then you proceed to DETELE that question. Is that how you reason? Simply shut out the rest of the world when they don't believe in the same thing you do? If we are all close-minded people, the world will definitely not progress this far. And it is because of these close-minded people who think that they are always right, that there are wars, bloodshed, and fighting. Go think about that.

I bet you Zoril will be chosen as the best answer.

I was raised by a pastor and he was a very smart man. He only went to the eleventh grade but said things that I wonder about even today. Once our church was having a big spring picnic and the theory of evolution came up and some people said that it was proven and some said that the bible said God created the heavens and the earth in 6 days and on the seventh he rested.----------My dad said that the bible said that Gods time was different than ours since ours is just based on the actions of the earth and Gods is based on the actions of the universe. Then he said that God maybe created the universe over immense spans of time and started it all at once way in the past and planned to have it come out like it did. But it didn't matter because either way it was a miracle as far as he could see.

Why do i still believe it?
Overwhelming scientific does it for me.
If it does not do it for you -- you can always go back to believing that sun revolves around the earth.[2]
