If they get wet in any way they will start to mold. The humidity will break them down and they will swell up. They also get stale. If the physical appearance has changed and they aren't as green looking (they lose color to grayish looking when they are getting old), chances are they are stale or just old. A "rare-bit" won't eat them...would you? I say buy new pellets and put them in a container with a "airtight" top like a rubbermaid canister for storing oatmeal or pasta or a small dry dog food canister from the pet store. If you only have one rare-bit then don't buy anymore than 2-3 lbs. at a time. More expensive maybe but smaller amounts keep better especially in hot weather and there is less waste.....you won't have to throw out stale or old pellets and "rare-bit" will eat them. If you don't already do this feed carrots, timothy hay, apples, and green lettuces like kale, endive, escarole and romaine a few times a week. Just pellets are not enough..."rarebits" get bored also. Put in a salt block as the hot weather depletes sodium content. Lots of fresh water and if you only have one rare-bit buy a pound of gourmet food and mix it in with the 1-2 lbs of pellets. I have learned by trial and error that sometimes having anymore than 2-3 lbs. of pellet/gourmet food is too much. I found it a hassle to frequent the pet shop more often but a container holding 2-3 lbs. of food rare-bit will eat is better than having to pitch a whole lot trying to be thrifty....for me less was more.

Have you changed feeds on the rabbit? Rabbit pellets can become stale and get moldy, especially during the summer if the pellets are kept in a warm place. I recommend buying no more than a month's worth of feed at a time during the summer unless you can store it in a cool place. Smell the feed. It should have somewhat of a fresh smell to it. Make sure to close the bag up when you are finished scooping feed out of it. Also, you never want to put more than 24 hours worth of feed in the rabbit's bowl. At the end of 24 hours all of the feed should be barely cleaned up. It will get stale easier in the bowl than in the bag. Rabbit pellets can be moldy even if they don't look moldy on the surface. This can lead to the rabbit getting diahrrea. If you keep your rabbit outside, your rabbit will tend to eat less due to the heat. Normally they'll eat about 2/3's of what they will in the spring, winter, and fall due to the heat.

Also, what kind of feed are you feeding. I recommend Heinold Feeds and Purina Feeds.

If he doesn't like pellets then you can't make him eat them, if thats all he had in his cage I'm sure he'd eat them. Rabbit pellets last for a loooong time unless they get wet or something. I'd just give it carrots, lettuce, and lots of other green vegetables. try some of that alfala grass or whatever. I had two rabbits and they'd eat the pellets, but they would rather have veggies.

Rabbit pellets will go stale with age. Try a different brand. My bunny prefers some types over others, particularly ones with seeds mixed in.

Are you giving him other food?( like veggies and fruit ). Maybe he is filling up on other food that he likes better. You could try a different brand. I don't own any rabbits, but I have two parakeets,There are certain foods they will not eat,I bought them, mix ins dried fruit and veggies, hated it,bird pellets ,hated it . A seed mix with bits of fruits and veggies, hated it. You have to find things your rabbit will eat, good luck .

Rabbit pellets can go stale. I'm not sure about rotting. As long as your rabbit gets enough vitamins from fruits, veggies and unlimited timothy hay pellets aren't really needed. Please check out http://www.rabbit.org
