Are we free or not?
Mel Gibson caves in to pressure and appologizes all over the place and the Jewish community says "we won't forgive you".
He should be able to stand by his beliefs , no matter how unpopular!
That is America! That is true freedom!

To boredlawyer: No , you mis-understand what my point was :
The social chastisement was exactly what I meant by " allowed" .... I do understand the constitution and legal points. What I was objecting to is that some people seem to think that just because something may be hateful or unpopular , that it's not protected. Freedom means free.... with no caveats.

i dont know if you've noticed this but in america more and more of our freedom is being taken away. now they can pull you over just for not having a seat belt on. now they can search your house or your car or make you wait in a longer line at the air port and search all your luggage just to be *****. you can't smoke OUTSIDE at the theme parks, you can't drink booze in your own back yards, someone can call the cops on you and just say you did something and you get arrested, even with no proof at all. the government is getting far to big for its britches and someone needs to make them go on a diet.

I think you mis-use or mis-understand the word "allowed".
There is no LEGAL penalty just for saying unpopular or hateful things. One doesn't get fined or imprisoned for having even the stupidest, most hateful ideas (no implication about you intended). In fact, stupid, hateful ideas often win people fame, fortune, and high political office.
What you seem to object to is the imposition of a SOCIAL penalty. You seem to object to other people expressing their distaste for saying unpopular things. J.S. Mill shared that view, but he was wrong for the same reason you are. You obsess on the unpopular individual and forget that, by denying the rights of every other person to disagree with that individual and not associate with him, you fundamentally destroy the freedom of every one EXCEPT the unpopular speaker.
Should the police bust in on the synagogues and force the people to watch Mel Gibson movies? Should everyone have to say nice things about him no matter what each person really thinks of him? Should we all be marched at bayonet-points to his next feature? Until you learn to think through all of the implications of a position BEFORE you leap into that position with both feet (as you have done on this one), you are in no position whatsoever to presume to lecture me or anyone else on what freedom or America is all about. Get off your high-horse and go read a book.

Well, actually the multicultural movement that sounded great (taking into consideration everyones feeling and differences)ended up stamping out your free speech. Now, you are not allowed to say anything about anyone least it hurt their feeling or offend them! However, there is a fine line between freedom of speech and truly damaging speech that must always be maintained.
Again I will ask, why do we care what Mel Gibson said? Yes, what he said was tasteless. But, why does his word get so much weight? If you don't like what he said, you are free to boycott anything he does.

Yes, there is freedom of speech.
Mel Gibson wants us to like him, though. We are his audience. If we don't like him, he won't make money.
Yes it is America and he has the right to be anti-semetic.
I would not want to put down the Jewish community. I am pro-Israel. They have been through enough, already.
I, also enjoy Mel Gibson. He should not have been driving drunk, though. He could have killed someone, and God forbid, a child. People should concentrate on the DUI.

You are able to stand up and say anything you want for the most part and the government won't interfere. But remember private citizens who are not the government have a right to be offended and to act accordingly. If you attack a group of people then you can expect the group to respond.

I would argue that we should be able to say rude things to people, and I can take rude comments, but since we are slowly but surely giving away our freedom, we now have to be politically correct.
Now, we're not allowed to think bad things, suggest anything, say something that may be construed as anti-anything, and so on. Hell, we can't even look at women, laugh at handicapped, or smile at kids. We'll all have to wear blinders and stare at the ground in the near future.

He is a popular personality and he does have the right to stand by his beliefs if he so desires. People will stop going to his movies but he can stand by what he said if he really wanted.
