It depends on your needs. If you just want to surf the web and type up reports, you really don't need to spend any more than $1,300 (at the most) on a unit. Just find something with a Celeron or basic AMD sempron processor and that's all there is to it. If you are looking for a great multimedia notebook, a SONY vaio, Micron, HP Omnibook vt6200 or later, Toshiba, or Alienware laptop is recommend. Those laptops will set you back up to $5,000, though. Alienware sells the most expensive laptops, but they are packed with the best you can get. Otherwise, if you just need a little more power, a Pentium 4 or AMD equivelent will do. It's all about the screen size, storage options, whether or not your optical drive is just a DVD, DVD-R or a combo DVD/RW drive, etc. Best Buy is currently having a sale on notebooks. Their cheapest notebook is selling for $400!! So, you might want to look into that if you are on a budget, but want something new and descent!! Hope that helps! *smiles*
I honestly would just look at your needs and wants and find something you like within your price range. All laptops except Alienware and SONY (that I am aware of to date) share the same chipsets, memory types, hard drive manufacturers, etc.
