I wouldn't choose a water birth myself, but apparently they are safe. It is the baby's face hitting the air that causes her/him to take a first breath; until the baby is out of the tub, she/he doesn't try to breathe and drown. They are still getting oxygen from the umbilical cord.

The baby is already floating around in amniotic fluid. Pretty similar to the pool thing. (As long as the baby is taken out of the pool water right away.) It's supposed to be gentler for the baby. I'm not sure what the advantage really is, though. Definately not something I did or would consider doing.

The possibility of drowning isn't there until a baby takes it's first breath of air. There's been numerous successful water births.

A woman would choose a water birth becasue it is amazing. Since you are not trapped to a bed with IV's and monitors, you can get up and move around...allowing gravity to do its job. Then you can get in the warm water to relax the rest of your body whil your uterus is working. For the mother...labor moves faster and less painfully. I had a 10 and half pound baby in the water...I pushed for only 6 minutes!

The warm water is supposed to be soothing. And the baby won't take it's first true breath until it's out of the water. I don't get the appeal myself, sitting in a bathtub/pool during labor seems like it would be soooo annoying.

It wouldn't drown the baby unless you cut the umbilical cord while it is still under water because it is receiving oxygen through it.

It lets them gradually get used to dry land! (honsetly, I read that somewhere before i did it[not sex had a water birth])It also puts less stress on the mother (kinda makes things bigger)
