It is monsoon time in both the cities, particularly Delhi and upward north. The variation in temperature swings high, depending upon the rains and humidity. An average temperature in Delhi should hover around Maximum 34 degree C and Minimum 26 degree C for August with humidity around 90%. In Chennai it should be in the range of 34 deg C to 37 deg C with humidity over 90-92 % for August.

new delhi should be hotter than 42 degrees actually but this time, this is just arround 32 degrees due to monsoons... as we people are lucky.... in chennai also the same condition prevails, but it is rainy season, mostly... with great humidity and sultry ness. may be you can get rid of sunlight, but the maximum temperature would not be less than 38 degrees...
