Some unions are more democratic than others (just like some "democratic" governments are more democratic than others). But yes, in general, having a union is more democratic than always saying yes to the commands of the bosses. Many unions are timid however, and are satisfied with just being a voice in the company rather than attempting to implement true democracy in the company. These are called "reformist" unions by the more revolutionary unionists like anarcho-syndicalists.
As far as buttercup's answer goes, if they threaten to close down the factory, do what many employees in Argentina did. Simply take over the factory and run it yourselves. Details at http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1482898

All Unions have outlived their purpose and usefulness.
Factories are closing all over our country and the Unions
aren't doing a darn thing to stop it. The factory workers
in my town stopped working and marched for higher wages,
supported by the Union. What happened? The factory
closed down and the workers then had no salary...thanks
Union officials for helping us lose our jobs. No more Unions
please.
