You really have to have read the books to know the whole story and what was going on there. Mr. Crouch, the minister of magic has a son, Barty. When Bartywas in his teens he was accused of being part of the group that tortured the Lonbottoms which made them mad. Bartholomew Jr. was then sentenced to Azcaban. (his father was on the committee that scentenced him, Belatrix Lastrange, and the couple..I can't remember their names) While being sentenced he cried out over and over again that he had not done it, he had no part in the torture, and was in fact not a deatheater nor a Voldemort follower. His mother who was in the crowd fell apart and began sobbing violently. Barty Jr. was cuffed and sent to Azcaban.
Later, when his mother's health was failing and his father could stand it no longer, his mother cloked herself with an invisibility cloak and went with Barty Crouch to visit their son. Barty Jr. was put under the imperious curse and snuck out while his mother took his place and later died (remember Dementors are blind).
Barty Crouch Jr. lived with his father for many many years under the imperious curse. The houself Winkie was the one that cared for Barty Jr. It was her job to make sure he was under control at all times. No one but Mr. Crouch and Winkie knew that Barty Crouch was living there, making him privy to all the comings and goings of the ministry and it's members. Mad Eye Moody was a aurer, making him a ministry memember and easy to get to know very well.
It was at the World Cup that Barty Crouch was finally able to break free of the imperious curse and move out on his own. He then moved to find Voldemort and was given orders.
We then come to the dustbin incident which was a ruse to hide the fact that Mad Eye was then being shoved into Barty's trunk and being taken over by Barty himself. I belive that his time at his father's house was what gave him the edge, was what taught him how to behave and enable him to befriend and fool Dumbledor.
It really is amazing how different the books are from the movies, I've given up on the movies entirely myself.
Hope that helps!

Barty Crouch takes over Mad Eye's body from the very beginning of his coming to Hogwarts. That's why he teaches such a terrible class about the three unforgivable curses and why there are the strange noises coming out of his trunk. I'm not sure why Dumbledore was oblivious to the situation for so long other than that he had no reason to suspect it was anyone else.

he took over at the "dust bins" incident, except it wasn't really dustbins the Crouch(Moody) used that as an excuse to avoid the authorities. I can only assume that Moody had been underservailance or perhaps that Crouch interigated him during the school year for the relevant information.

You have to understand, Moody is a well known wizard. Chances are, BC Jr. was prolly watching Mad Eye and learning to be like him. He could have captured Moody anytime. He just starts acting like Moody, who lived by himself and everything so no one would have noticed until he came to the school. He just played the part really well.

Mad Eye was an Auror, and Barty Crouch Jr. (I believe) wanted to be one, until he went to Voldemort. You may want to also check out Harry Potter Chats.
