I definitely do not believe they are one in the same simply because during my teen years (despite what people assumed) I was very shy and it took me a lot of self-prodding to move towards a less shy personality. However, I was classed as snobbish and stuck up simply because people didn't simply look at me as a person, they looked at the entire package including my family status. From all of this, snobbish, stuck up and stand offish or better than everyone else, where labels that I had slapped on me for years.
Even in my adulthood, the problem continued...I wasn't a strong conversationalist and I didn't have much nerve to walk up to anyone and start a conversation. Today, I'm far from that person and I've worked very hard to become who I am today...now, I'm considered by most as outgoing, friendly, talkative...etc., and nothing near snobbish. Of course I also work hard to ensure that I don't give any reason for anyone to assume I'm snobbish, even tho our lifestyle and surroundings could support that label if I wanted to go totally backwards.
Anyone who has this problem should work through it and ignore those who think they know the person well enough to comment on their attitude or personality. Eventually, the shyness gives way to self confidence that offers the ability to deal with pretty well any circumstance or surrounding...
Snobbish is something I could never understand other girls trying to be and I would have given them my label any time.
However, I think there are a few who wish I'd revert back to "shy" as I tend to blab...a lot at times!

No. The roots of shyness is a lack of confidence in ones self. The roots of snobiness is an overconfidence in ones self. People who are shy are so because they are afraid around new people. Snobs are afraid to be seen with particular people. Basically, they're completely opposite, one extreme to another.

Shyness and snobbishness are two entirely different things.
I wouldn't know why some people confuse the two.
I personally never have.
But the similarity between the two is that they are only first impressions.
A person is rarely that way once you truly get to know them for who they are.
I apologize if my opinion didn't answer or help much, but I hope it did.
Take care!

absolutely not.... unfortunately shyness comes off as the person might be aloof or uppity as they say but really the person just has problems coping with social anxiety and unable to relate the way a extroverted person may respond in social settings... otherwise known as introverted. Society so rarely takes the time any more to ask questions and just judge based on incorrect or insufficient information about someones character.... it is sad and shuts so many out. Sometimes the pressure of having to perform socially locks someone in a cocoon and makes them seem stand offish because they don't participate or talk about themselves or volunteer information and before you know you'll hear someone say "Who does she/he think she/he is.. to good for us?" expecially if the quite person tends to want to be alone a lot... We call persons who suffer variants of this disorder Social Phobics or suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).... hope this helps

probably because people think that people that are snobbish act phony and act like there too good to be acknowledged,so it makes them shy in an unheathy way ,snobbishness is confused for shyness because it created a new definition for it

Well, i'm a very shy person but i'm definately not snobby. People confuse us shy people with snobby people, I believe, because we don't come right out and say what we are thinking and that confuses people. They often tend to think we are stuck up and don't want to talk to them but in reality, we just don't really know what to say half the time. I think alot of people feel intimidated just because we don't talk much.

Sometimes snobbishness is just covering up shyness, they are not, however, the same thing.

shyness is when you dont really talk to people because your scared. snobbishness is when you dont talk to people because you think your better than them or something
people confuse them because in both cases... you wont talk to certain people.
