I think what you meant to ask was why not use OUR oil now.
The last country with energy will be the global winner.
So lets use THEIRS up first and then we will have OURs
left. If we let china make all our goods and use up the
middle east oil doing it, when they run out guess what
We have all the stuff we need and oil to boot.

Getting to that oil is hard and takes a very long time.
Therefore the only sources of oil that are avaliable in the next dozen sources are in the middle east and similar places.
The oil in ANWR won't be avaliable for 12 to 20 years if they started development now. Then the area would be ruined for the nature that is there for all time. Even if they could get it now, there isn't enough of it.
We need the alternative energy product to lower demand for oil. That is what they are doing.

rj and delta xray are both right, and = oil is not finite, it just doesnt regenerate as fast as we are using it, in the manner we are using it. when there were billions of grazing animals on earth the earth didn't have enough underground storage space and you could find tar pits and oil swamps everywhere. When i was young there was a place where swamp fires were common: that is when a cat would attack a deer and when the claws dug in , it would cast a spark, the spark would light the gas the deer hooves were releasing, the gas fire would scare the cat, the cat and the deer both go running for water, with a ball of fire coming up out of every step they both would take!

The really good energy alternatives are being bought out by the oil companies. They know there is more money to be made so they will not allow a cheaper fuel source to come along so long as they have the money to buy the rights to it, which they do.

Hey Stupidhead...as you so eliquently put it in one of your answers.....Answers International is basically the same as all of them. You are pretty rude in your answers. You enjoy belittling others, but your answers are not all that bright. Knock it off!
And this current question is totally naive and infantile.

I think we should use the imported stuff first. Then ours will be more valuable in the future.
Won't it be interesting when it's fresh water, not oil? That'll separate the men from the boys.

Because if we do use it up right away, we'll be walking to and fro for the next few years while a new energy source is finalized.

There are so many other things that petroleum can be used for besides running our autos and planes. If we use it up that will be the end of cheap plastic. Think about how much of our lives involve plastic.

We have HUGE oil deposits in the arctic and offshore but the tree-huggers have fits anytime there's legislation to make those fields accessible to drilling...
