Johannes, like John, Ivan, Ian, and many other forms, goes back to the Hebrew name Yohanna (popular because it was the name of two important New Testament characters -- John the Baptist and the apostle John).

This name means "Yah(weh) is gracious" Traditionally the Hebrew personal name for God --Yahweh-- is rendered as "the LORD" in English, so the name is often translated as "the LORD is gracious"

The -es ending is from the Greek form of the name (since this biblical name is only found in the NEW Testament --which was written in Greek). In fact, "Johannes" is the form of the name in several Germanic languages, including German, Dutch and various Scandinavian languages.

I believe that Johannes is originally Indonesian. In their language it means the one who sleeps in the fetal position and enjoys orange sherbet. The Mongolians refer to an ancestor who has caused shame upon the whole village as joianees, this may also be part of your family history.
