1. Let the speed of one plane be x mph
thus, the speed of the other plane will be 100x mph (as one plane is 100 mph faster than the other)

since the plane are going in opposite directions their relative speed will be the sum of their speeds, that is, 100x + x mph

by formula ==> time taken = distance / relative speed
that is, 2000 / (100x + x)

but we do not know the value of x so more info is reqd to solve the problem.

2. the investor had gained (1/3 * $ 10000) and had lost (2/3 * $ 10000) in the entire year thus, bringing his total money to $ 8000

3. 2/3(36x - 6) = 68
==> 2/3*36 x - 2/3*6 = 68
==> 2*12 x - 2*2 = 68
==> 24x = 68 + 4
==> x = 72 / 24
==> x = 3

1. Not enough info. We have 2 variables here, rate and time. With 2 variables we would need to be able to write 2 equations. The 2000 miles gives you one equation, but we need another.

2. 10000 - 2x + x = 8000
-x = -2000
x = 2000 Gained 2000, lost 4000

3. 3(2/3)(36x-6) = 3(68)
2(36x-6) = 204
36x-6 = 102
36x = 108
x=3

1. It can be anything. Like if the speed is 950 & 1050mph respectively, then answer is one hour.
Similarly if the speed is 450 & 550mph respectively, then answer is two hours.

2. He gained $2000 but lost $4000.

3. 36x-6=68*3/2=102, So, x=108/36=3

The first one is not answerable as both of their speeds are part of the function, not just difference in speed.

2. He gained 2k and lost 4k.

3. I guess you mean solve for x....

2(12x-2)=68

24x-4=68

24x=72

x=3

3 people in a row have the right answers so that will be hard who should get the 10 points but in my view i suggest you give it to Jen because she was the fist to place definite and correct answers whereas the other two after her copied were finders keepers first one to do it, so hard choice.
