It all depends on where you live. Your landlord may have specified in the lease that it is forbidden. There may be local rules against it. Or not. To find out, re-read your lease to see what your landlord said, then call the local fire department to ask about any local rules. You might also check with the people upstairs--it's only polite, since they will be breathing your smoke if you use charcoal.

Buy a George Foreman grill - use can still cook outside if you must, you won't be breaking any of your housing codes, no smoke and smell.

But yes, it's illegal to BBQ on a balcony.

It may be illegal in some cities, but even if it isn't illegal
it sure is stupid. I've seen three apartment fires caused
by people lighting the charcol after it's been soaked in lighter fluid.

The flames cause the balcony to catch on fire.
It took the fire dept 4 hours on one to get it under control
because the wind was blowing hard.

No one was hurt but everyone in the whole apartment building
lost everything they owned.

You'd have to read your lease or the building code.

I wouldn't attempt it unless the balcony is huge and you can light the fire far away from windows, drapery, etc.

A lot of people use 'hibachi's' (sp?) - they are small and probably the most safe.
