It would be easier to put a new one in.
Look for the door bell lump in the plaster" Some Stud Finders have a metal detector and some have a voltage detector.

Try a stud sensor. They're cheap ($10 at the Depot). It'll detect anything that's not drywall or plaster.

Don't find it, replace it.
They make battery operated door bells that use one AA or AAA battery and the chime part plugs in wherever you want it, in the living room, kitchen, wherever. Lowes, Wal-Mart, every place has them.

Act like your putting in a new one. When you go to drill a new hole, you will undoubtably drill right into the old one. You wanted to find it didnt you?

use the plastic handle of a screwdriver, make sure it's smooth and tap on your wall. the spot with the doorbell should sound different.
