Why do people think they are the same as anteaters?

Several reasons:
1. Aardvarks look like anteaters.
2. Aardvarks walk like anteaters.
3. Aardvarks eat the same things as anteaters.
4. They eat by the same process, licking ants and termites from their nest.
However, aardvarks live in Africa, anteaters live in South America. Also, the closest relatives of anteaters are sloths, while aardvarks have no really close relatives in the animal kingdom.

Because they are similar in shape, size, and gait.
